Overview

WinRAR can encrypt archives with a password so the contents — and optionally even the file names — stay hidden from anyone who doesn't have the password.

Step 1

Right-click the file or folder you want to compress and choose Add to archive.

Step 2

In the archive settings window, click the Set password button under the General tab.

Step 3

Enter and confirm your password. Check Encrypt file names if you also want the list of files hidden until the correct password is entered.

Step 4

Click OK, then OK again to create the encrypted archive.

Tips

  • Use a password you'll remember — WinRAR has no recovery option if you forget it.
  • AES-256 encryption (WinRAR's default) is strong enough for most personal and business use.
